Kathleen M. Henry Treasurer, Board of Directors
Kathleen M. Henry, formerly a decade-long member of the New England Steering Committee of HRC, is the Treasurer of The Friends. She served as President from the inception of the organization in 2003 until 2005 when Mr. Younger assumed the role. Ms. Henry served as the Chair of the Governor's Commission, appointed by Acting Governor Jane Swift in 2002. During her tenure the budget for the Commission recovered to a degree from earlier savage budget cuts, increasing every year. In the Spring of 2006 it became clear that the Commission needed to be independent of executive branch vagaries. Kathleen spearheaded the lobbying effort to bring about the Massachusetts State Legislature's signing the Commission into law, thus protecting the work of the Commission from the instability of its serving at the whim of sitting governors. She continued to serve as Co-Chair of the newly constituted Commission from its inception until the summer of 2007.
Kathleen is a writer, a classically trained singer, and a community-ordained minister. She majored in music at Manhattanville College and received a BA and MA in English at Marquette University. She currently serves on the Board of the Writers' Room of Boston. She has taught English literature and writing at the high school and college level. She has done much volunteer work for Project Hope in Dorchester including staging a fundraising celebration of its anniversary, held at the Strand Theatre. She also coordinated two national conventions, one held in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a feminist group called Womenchurch and the other held in Weston, MA for the Sacred Dance Guild of America.
She makes her home in Jamaica Plain and Truro where she lives with her wife of 38 years.
